Carolyn + Megan

Port Oneida sits in the rural stretch of Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore just outside Glen Arbor, and most people drive right past it. There are no signs pulling you in, no overlooks with parking lots. What's there instead: wide open farm fields, the weathered remnants of old homestead buildings, and a quiet road that eventually leads down to a long, unhurried stretch of Lake Michigan shoreline. Carolyn and Megan wanted all of it, and that's exactly what we did.

A place worth knowing

Port Oneida is a National Historic District, which means those old farm structures are protected and still standing. Barns, fence lines, stone foundations. They give the landscape a particular kind of weight that you don't get at the more polished spots along the lakeshore. It doesn't feel like a photography backdrop. It feels like somewhere people actually lived, and that comes through in the photos.

For an engagement session, that matters. You want somewhere with depth to it. Somewhere that gives you room to move around, to explore, to not feel like you're standing in front of a set piece. Port Oneida gives you all of that, and the variety across a single stretch of road is hard to beat.

How the session went

We started in the fields. There's something about open space that helps people settle in. No walls, no crowding, just room to be themselves. Carolyn and Megan were easy together from the start, and that showed in how quickly the session found its rhythm. We worked through the old farm buildings while the afternoon was still bright, then made our way down to the beach as things got quieter.

The beach at Port Oneida doesn't get the traffic that Sleeping Bear Point or Glen Haven does. On a good afternoon you might have it to yourselves, or close to it. The shoreline runs long enough that you can move without running out of real estate, and the dune grass at the edge gives you natural framing you can't manufacture. It's a genuinely good place to end a session.
