Couple at the Lake Michigan Overlook on Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive, Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore

Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive

I was almost five years into this work before I shot a session at Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive. I don't know why it took me so long. The first time I pulled up to the Lake Michigan Overlook with a couple, I understood immediately why people plan trips around this place. It's a 7.4-mile loop through Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, and in those seven miles you get dune overlooks, deep wooded stretches, a covered bridge at the entrance, and one of the most unobstructed views of Lake Michigan you'll find anywhere in Northern Michigan. I've been shooting here ever since, and I know it well.

What makes it work for photography

Pierce Stocking is one of those places that gives you several completely different environments in a single session. The forested sections feel quiet and enclosed. The dune overlooks feel enormous. The Lake Michigan Overlook stops people in their tracks every time. That range is genuinely useful when you're shooting a two-hour engagement or a family session with kids who need variety to stay engaged.

The overlooks are the draw, but the forest sections deserve more credit. Midday, when the sun is high and most open locations turn harsh, the tree cover creates shadow and contrast that you can actually use. Dappled shade, filtered light through the canopy. If you're working midday, head for the trees.

On the dunes themselves, low angles work. Getting the camera close to the sand makes the dunes read as much larger in the frame. The sand patterns and sparse dune vegetation are also worth slowing down for. Most people walk past that texture. Close in on it and you get something different from every other overlook photo out there.

The Lake Michigan Overlook is the highlight, and it earns that reputation. The scale of the view, the color of the water, the long sightline to the Manitou Islands on clear days. If you're planning a session here for an engagement, this is the stop you build the session around. Get there and wait for the conditions to shift. It's worth the patience.

Planning your session

Get there early or plan for evening. The overlooks fill by 9am in summer, and once the parking areas are packed, you're working around strangers in every frame. I tell people to aim for before 8am if they want the overlooks to themselves in the morning. Evening works too, and the angle of the sun gets more favorable as it drops.

For family sessions, early morning has an added benefit: kids are fresher, the light is softer, and the drive is quiet. By midmorning on a summer weekend, it's a different experience entirely. Plan accordingly.

Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive is open early May through November, weather permitting. It's part of Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, so the park entrance fee applies. Current fee information is at nps.gov/slbe. There are restrooms and picnic areas along the route. Plan to spend at least two hours if you're doing a full session here.

One more thing: at some point during the session, actually put the camera down and look at the view. I say this to myself as much as to anyone else. The Overlook earns it.
