Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive is one of those locations that rewards people who actually move through it. Not just the overlook parking lot — the whole loop. Piper and Leland did that. We covered overlook #9, a stretch of wooded trail that doesn't show up in anyone's top-ten list, the main dune vista, and then the road itself as the park emptied out and the sky went orange.
What Piper and Leland Were Like
Some couples need a little time to warm up. Piper and Leland were not those people. They were close and easy with each other from the start — the kind of comfortable that reads well in photos without requiring any direction. They'd reach for each other between setups. That's actually the stuff that makes the session.
Engagement sessions at Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive can go sideways if there's no range to the day. The overlook views are dramatic but they're all the same kind of dramatic. Piper and Leland gave us a full arc: open sky at the overlooks, shade and green on the wooded trail, the scale of the dune face, and then something quieter and more personal at the end.
The End of the Day
By the time we got to the road, the park had cleared out. That stretch of pavement through the dunes is wide open and quiet in the evening, and Piper and Leland just started dancing in the middle of it. Nobody asked them to. The light was going flat, which is honestly fine — it's soft and even and it doesn't compete with the subjects. They danced. I photographed. That was the end of the session.
Pierce Stocking is a well-photographed place, and for good reason. But the sessions that hold up are the ones that treat it like more than a backdrop — that actually work the full loop and let the couple move. That's what this one did.
