Fishtown in the morning light, Lake Michigan a short walk from the ceremony, the whole town fitting in a few quiet blocks. It photographs like nowhere else.
Why Leland
Leland sits at the tip of a narrow strip of land with Lake Michigan to the west and Lake Leelanau to the east. The light there behaves differently because the water is everywhere — you feel it even when you can't see it. Evenings get soft in a way that's hard to plan for and impossible to replicate.
Fishtown is right in the middle of everything. The old fishing shanties along the Leland River have been there since the 1800s, and they give the town a texture that newer venues can't manufacture. A couple stepping out of a ceremony venue and walking toward those docks for portraits — that moment practically makes itself.
We photographed a wedding at the Old Art Building that ended with portraits on the Lake Michigan beach across the street. The ceremony was under a canopy of trees, the reception was inside the building itself, and the light at the end of the evening was something we still talk about. That's Leland.
